A toothed belt is one of the most common belts we deal with. Toothed belt, also known as cogged belt, cog belt, synchronous belt, and often timing belt are an extremely popular form of power transmission. As you can probably imagine, they have no slippage when properly applied. They are recognized by the characteristic “teeth” or “cogs” which are what prevents slippage, although if they don’t have the correct tension then things can go real bad, real fast.

The design of a cogged belt means that it can pack much more of a punch and deliver the power that a standard friction drive belt can’t, additionally it is extremely rare for a timing belt to break, unless a rock or some foreign material gets up in there. However there are 2 different ways for a toothed belts to break down, one of which is a gradual process and the other is real bad news all of a sudden.
What typically happens is that the teeth get gradually worn down, leading to the belt slipping. Usually the belt continues to work, but the timing then starts to change which causes problems. Sometimes a physical inspection of the teeth of the belt can pick up on this, but often the problem is entirely internal. That’s why most timing belts have a recommend replacement after a specific amount of usage.
The other problem is when the belt becomes delaminated. This is when the individual parts of the belt separate and start to splinter. This can also be caused by age and wear but a lot of the time it happens because the belt had been taking some kind of abuse, possibly improperly installed, or had even been stored incorrectly, knotted or wadded up.
